what does social security income have to do with medicaid?
i am trying to apply for medicaid but i can't because i don't have social security income. i am 18 years old with a heart condition called tetralogy of fallot. i have had major surgery because of this condition. i need medicaid for check ups and maintenance. they said i need social security income but i don't know what it is or even know if i have it. my friend who has nothing wrong with his body and is the same age and graduated from high-school is applying with a green light. he has a job while i don't, which is the only difference. we have recently graduated from high-school. i don't get it. can someone please explain to me what i have to really do? what is social security income mean and what does it have to do with medicaid? i am not disabled mentally or physically but i do need check ups. my doctor even says i am fit.

- social security income means that you have a job and social security taxes are being paid for the income you earn on that job.
- Here is the link for medicaid eligibility requirements. There is a link embedded in the web page for statesEach state has certain requirements but you must be low income.Being on Social security is one of them. Not sure why your friend is on it,may be a reason he is not giving you.
- Medicaid eligibility depends mainly on household income - not your specific medical condition or history. Medicaid is intended for low income families only. What your friend is or is not doing has nothing to do with your situation. I think what "they" told you is to apply for Social Security Disability.
- Medicaid is based on household income, household assets, and the number of people in your house. If you qualify for SSI, in some states, you automatically qualify for Medicaid. But just because you don't get SSI, doesn't mean you won't qualify for Medicaid. At the age of 18, if you live with a parent, who has a job, they should be able to cover you under the insurance through their employer.
- SSI is what the county gives you if you have no income at all and Medicaid is what you get for health care. You have to apply at the welfare or social services office or the Dept of Health & Human services. Where did you apply for Medicaid? You must go in person. You have to list all your household income and who lives there.
