Is it trus that refugee assistance is more than ssi?
If the immigrant is over 65 they can apply for SSI and Medicaid and get more than my mom gets for Social Security, and she worked from 1944 till 2004, only getting $791 per month because she was born in 1924 and there is a "catch 22". It is interesting that the federal government provides a single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890.00 and each can also obtain an additional $580.00 in social assistance for a total of $2,470.00/month. This compares very well to a single pensioner who after contributing to the growth and development of America for 40 t o 50 years can only receive a monthly maximum of $1, 012.00 in old age pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement.

- Wow, I would hope not.
- True ! America is a great to be if you are not an American.
- Well, refugee assistance doesn't go on forever. The US pays various NGOs like Lutheran World Services and many others to help refugees resettle in the US. Has for a long time. There are no requirements that refugees have US families, English language or job skills. So, many, if not most have no safety net to get them through except the USG. These are folks who's lives are supposed to be in mortal danger, who fled their homes for various wars, some of them having worked for us in the past as in Southeast Asia, or Afghanistan, and whose lives were at risk as a result, more or less like the Iraqi translators these days. Now, there are any number of exceptions to be sure, but it is frequently true enough, and far too often, more true than you'd care to think about, much less know for a fact. Now, if you were going to take some Hmong hill tribe person or a Montegnard out of Southeast Asia, people who are aliterate, or people who didn't even have their own writing system and send them off to Minnesota, don't you think they need something a little more substantial than a hearty, "good luck and God bless", if they're going to survive? The number of folks we take in as refugees is far, far lower than the number of legal immigrants, who do have or are supposed to have safety nets, about 75,000 per year at present. A mere drop in the bucket compared to the numbers of folks currently out there in various camps, and on their own. Doesn't mean there aren't abuses and problems, but ...
- The real question IS why do the Illegal Aliens, Refugees, .....get any $ for being in OUR Country? US Citizens esp our Military Men and Women are treated like sh.it by our gov.
- What a country. We pay for foreigners to have the privilege of sucking off of us. They have never paid a cent in taxes but are able to come here and reap the benefits. I feel no responsibility in providing support for those who come here and can't even speak English.
