do senior citizens have to pay income taxes?

my mother is 82 yrs old. she draws social security, and a small retirement, and she also draws my dads retirement. (who is now deceased) does she have to file income taxes? i have heard that you don't have to pay anymore once you reach a certain age.

  1. yes
  2. not true, they have to pay.for example, if there is interest on money in some bank accounts it is considered income and they have to pay taxes.there are other reasons the gov wants them to pay
  3. depends what her income is [not counting S.S] form 1040A says if your gross income is less than $10,300 you do NOT need to file. age doesn't enter into it however if you are under 65 you have to file if income is over $8,950. if you want to verify it call I.R.S. at 1800-829-1040
  4. Depends of what type of Social Security, You should check what is taxable with a professional. My husband get SS Disability and some of it is taxable.
  5. It will depend on her annual income. My Mom had to file for several years, but it got to a point where her income was low enough that I didn't file for her. I suggest you go to your local senior center or library and see if they have volunteers who will help you fill out her paperwork. Just because you have reached a certain age doesn't mean you don't have to file federal taxes. You may be confusing federal taxes with property taxes. I believe that property taxes are reduced in some areas of the our country.
  6. I get SSDI and I owe money this year. I guess they want me to pull it out of my azz.
  7. If your father is deceased your mother should be getting only your dad's SS if his is greater than your mom's. You can't draw both. Also we are retired but still pay income taxes. Poppy
  8. You betcha, if income is enough. Not sure about an age limit
  9. yes she has to file -- in fact if her total income exceeds x dollars part of social security check is taxable!!!
  10. Yes. Nobody is exempt from filing federal tax forms because of age. You may not pay taxes, but you still have to do the paper work. Hopefully the easiest form you can use.
  11. Tax forms must be filed if total income is over a certain dollar amount, no matter what age. Taxes may not be due, but it is still required to file.
