How Does My Dad Obtain Early Social Security at Age 62?

My dad is 62 years old and wants to go on early social security. He makes no income now. He really needs the help financially. What are the steps to take in order to obtain social security for him? I feel bad and want to help him with this..Thanks.

  1. He applies for it the same way he would if he waited until 65: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/retire2/applying8.htm
  2. He can Google the Social Security Administration and apply on line. I did and never had to go to an office. I was called by a representative to go over some of the info I provided but that was it. Really simple.
  3. Usually you go to the local Social Security office about 3 months before your 62 year birthday. After verifying some data on his past work history and military record (if he has one) the check will show up the month after his birthday. When he goes to the SS office he will need his SS card. He should start looking up his DD214 from his military service (if any) and his past work history for the previous 4 years or more just in case. They may ask him about a previous work history and document any self employment. Doesn't hurt to have recent tax records. Don't be disappointed if you have to go back and forth a few times - that's normal. Once the check starts coming it is regular. Have a bank deposit slip or check so the money can be sent to his bank direct deposit. Good luck.
